I’m awful, aren’t I? Really, I am. I would like to get back into the swing of things with tumblr, but I know I have to cover some portion of this New Zealand trip before I’ll feel good about resuming tumblr as normal. And there are so many pictures to sort through, it’s completely daunting.

Well. I’m at work. I have nothing to do. It’s time to get cracking.

Anyway, here I am, safely on my own continent & missing the country of the Kiwis dearly. After approximately 4 full days of air travel (much of that spent in the middle seat. in coach.), I am alive and well, if jet-lagged.

First of all, let’s get the most important item out of the way.

Damn, that feels good. Thank you, Obama, for treating Roy’s Boys so well.

Second of all, despite originally scoffing at this show and everything it stood for, I am now in-over-my-head obsessed with Greek. And although I know he’s not the one I should be swooning over, I’ve fallen in love with Evan Chambers.

Or Jake McDorman, I guess. Whatever. He’s Evan.

And…third of all, I’m leaving for the next month. If you remember that time I tried to surround myself in mystique and hint to a summer adventure, here it is.

I’m going to New Zealand! I’m going to New Zealand. It hasn’t sunk in yet. Probably due to the following factors being blocked by the process of selective memory:

18+ hrs on a plane
44 pounds maximum in 1 checked bag
boots slightly less offensive than these (if only by the merit of their women’s design)
no hair dryer
no clothing dryer
one towel
11 strangers
a conservation project that will no doubt have my project leader limiting us to 5 minute showers
southern hemisphere winter
no cell phone
no computer (?)
my high maintenence status

Yes. Looking at that list, one might think this will culminate in disaster. But hey, I’m going to look on the bright side instead & say that remains to be seen. With “the right mindset” (traveler’s guide, pg 46), that last little bullet could be totally annihilited.

For my sanity, let’s hope so.

And yes, I did sign myself up for this. Six months ago. When “Oh, I’ll just go to New Zealand for five weeks” sounded like a romantic proposition.

I will be back June 18th, holding no freaky wilderness accidents occur. Enjoy the rest of May, tumblr, & don’t miss me too much.

P.S. Just so you know I’ve studied, that there, above, is a kiwi, and bob’s your uncle.

I’M ALIVE. Finals took a hit to my GPA & an even bigger one to my Tumblr, but here I am! Um. For the next three days….will explain more when I’m coherent. Have just awoken from a three-day non-stop sleepfest (as promised). It’s difficult to tumble when you’re stuck somewhere between comatose and conscious.

One more exam. Eight am. Currently two am. Two books to read. Five more sections of notes to read....

the evolving mantra

There was a point in this year when the burden of classes, college, friends, laundry, responsibility, distance from home - it all felt like too much. Of course, it wasn’t, but I had no perspective. To help myself through the late nights where I pumped caffeine into my body and wished to hell I didn’t procrastinate, I would tell myself:

I can do this and more.

It inspired me and got the job done. Tonight I had dinner with one of the most phenomenal people I have ever met. She is a student, but she doesn’t need to be qualified as such, because she is simply a stand-alone phenomeonon. In any population, among any crowd. I won’t elaborate on her achievements (just for a taste: she’s a sophomore with a double major in biology and chemistry, who will graduate next year, and has at least 2 job offers and 1 med school admission on the table). Not kidding. She also happens to be beautiful (really, not just saying that), chill, fun, down-to-earth, and totally in balance.

I’ve never felt so inspired. And now my new mantra is:

I can do about 10 times what I’m doing, and DAMMIT I will.

Moral of the story: if you have a person like that in your life, don’t let them make you feel inferior or insufficient. Learn from them.
